Conventional sliding spool directional valves operate using a closely fitting spool and bore. To enable the spool to slide freely, there is a small clearance between the outside diameter of the spool and the internal diameter of the bore. This clearance will inevitably allow internal leakage and will also be prone to contamination causing the valve to stick or even jam completely.

PDP® rotary shear valves use a precision-engineered rotary shear design that creates a positive metal-to-metal shut-off. This prevents the pressure loss, or “decay,” that spool valves suffer from, guaranteeing consistent performance even after years of operation and countless duty cycles.
