Ben Shook, a first year apprentice engineer with Webtec, the St Ives, Cambridgeshire based hydraulic measurement and control company was recently recognised for his outstanding progress over the last year.

Ben started a Precision Engineering course at Cambridge Regional College in 2014 and was offered a 3-year Apprenticeship at Webtec in October 2014. Ben was selected from approximately 500 apprentices and given the “Most improved Engineer of the year” award at a recent ceremony in Cambridge.

Ben’s ambition is to receive the Best Overall Apprentice.

Ben’s major hobby is motorcycle drag racing and when asked if this apprenticeship has helped he replied, “Most definitely, and that’s the reason I want to learn more, as engineering is a really important part of my life both in my work and my hobby”.

The first year CRC apprentices have to complete a college project and Ben’s was to make a pipe vice from mild steel and brass which tests a range of different skills including thread cutting, milling, drilling and tapping, hand fitting of brass jaws plus final assembly of all components.
