Webtec’s Engineers Support Local Academy to Compete in UK Scheme To Inspire Young Engineers and Scientists

Webtec, the St Ives based specialist manufacturer of hydraulic measurement and control products, has once again teamed up with engineers of the future from the local St Ivo Academy to take part in this year’s Engineering Education Scheme (EES). This EDT programme links teams of 16/17 year old pupils and their teacher with local companies to work on real, scientific and technological problems.

Around 1,400 pupils take part throughout the UK and the scheme, which has been running since 1984, provides students with in-depth experience of science, engineering and technology giving them personal development education through work related learning. Webtec’s passion to encourage young people in the local community to follow a career in engineering is the driving force behind its commitment in supporting this project. All participating students who complete the programme will graduate as Industrial Cadets at Gold Level

This year, Webtec challenged the team from the St Ivo Academy to focus on the “Remote monitoring of hydraulic flow, temperature and pressure to assist in the preventative maintenance of mobile machinery.”

The project will run from October 2019 through to April 2020 and the mixed team of six pupils was selected following an interview of potential candidates, which this year was over subscribed and of a very high standard.

Martin Cuthbert, Webtec’s Managing Director commented, “Supporting young engineers is very important to us and we are lucky to have such local talent on our doorstep. This is the fifth year that we have supported this scheme and it is great to see the challenge grow and inspires others to enjoy the challenges that engineering brings”.

The St Ivo team will be mentored by Andy Peacock and Mark Szkornik from Webtec, who will be visiting the school on a weekly basis to work with the pupils to pass on their engineering experience and help the team to learn new skills.
